Cybill Shepherd

Cybill Shepherd

Cybill Lynne Shepherd was born on February 18, 1950 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father is William Jennings Shepherd and her mother is Patty Shobe. She loves music, and started singing in church while just eight years old. With her wholesome blond good looks, she won the 1966 Miss Teenage Memphis contest while still in high school, which led to modeling work. She graduated from Memphis East High School in 1968.

Shepherd continued her modeling career after graduation. She was curvier than Twiggy and other bone-thin models at the time, which was a refreshing change, and perhaps contributed to her being named Model of the Year in 1968. She was featured on the cover of Glamour magazine in 1970, where director Peter Bogdanovich saw it while waiting supermarket checkout line. He thought she was perfect for his next film, and cast her in The Last Picture Show (1971). She and Bogdanovich began a romantic relationship that lasted for lasted eight years. Her next few films flopped, but she found success again in 1976 with a role in Martin Scorsese’s film, Taxi Driver.

In 1978 Shepherd decided to take a break from show business to return to her hometown of Memphis, where she married a local auto-parts dealer named David Ford. They had one daughter together, named Clementine Ford, who was born 1980. Shepherd and Ford divorced in 1982.

In 1983, she won a television role on the night time drama, The Yellow Rose (1983). Soon after, she got the role of Maddie on the detective comedy Moonlighting. It was hugely successful, in part because of the chemistry she had with her co-star, Bruce Willis. She earned two Golden Globe awards while starring on the show.

Shepherd married again in 1987, this time to chiropractor Bruce Oppenheim. Their twins, Ariel and Zachariah, were born in late 1987. The marriage only lasted 3 years, and they were divorced in 1990.

In 1997, she found television success again, in her own CBS sitcom, Cybill. She played a character based on her own life, and won her third Golden Globe award that year. Shepherd recently portrayed Martha Stewart in two television movies, and continues to work on her singing career.
