Reality TV became a big hit all over the world from “Big Brother” and “American Idol” to “The Biggest Loser”. Since then, more reality TV shows have been coming out from dating shows such as “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” to game shows “Survivor” and “Amazing Race”. CW is about to unleash its new reality TV show entitled “Shedding for the Wedding” which premiers on the 23rd of February and hosted by Sara Rue. In one of the previews of this new show, there was a scene of an overweight woman being forced to exercise until she throws up. It is not new that reality TV shows entertain their audience by making their subject thrown into situations that are uncomfortable for them either for dramatic or comedic purposes which was earlier seen on the classic gag show called “Candid Camera”. This kind of show started outside the U.S. with the Europeans and Japanese pushing the limits of its subject through crazy game shows and pranks. It is true that it is very entertaining since it has this shocking factor, but too much of it can be disgusting or pitiful for the victims.
Celebrities who are still starting up hoping to make it big as well as ordinary people sell their lives to reality TV show producers who follow them everywhere and document their life. Some of the successful actors who became famous for their own reality TV show are Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and Kim Kardashian. Famous pop singer Lady Gaga once said in its interview on “60 Minutes” that the age were living in right now wants to see people who have it all lose it and that’s what makes life so dramatic. Lady Gaga’s comment was true as seen in various celebrity reality TV shows such as “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” which features celebrities suffer through withdrawal such as what happened to Jeff Conaway (former co-star of “Taxi”) who works hard to get better. The main focus of this kind of show is to see more pain and tears close-up which may not be good for minors.
“Shedding For The Wedding” is produced by Raquel Productions who also made “The Biggest Loser” and “Pimp My Ride”. This show features nine overweight couples who try to lose weight for a chance to win their dream wedding. Just like “The Biggest Loser”, each couple would weigh in after each episode and the couple who has the least combined weight loss for the week would be eliminated.
