Haley makes Lucas go to the basketball after-party at Nathan's family's beach house hoping that Nathan and Lucas will settle their differences. However, the beach house makes Lucas think about the life he never had, prompting him to ask his mother why Dan was never a part of his life. Meanwhile, Deb, Nathan's mother, comes to Karen for advice after Nathan continues to get himself into trouble.

Lucas asks Keith to play in the annual Father and Son Ravens basketball game and soon realizes that not having Dan in his life may have been for the best. Meanwhile, Peyton struggles to cope on the anniversary of her mother's death, but finds an unlikely shoulder to lean on when Nathan fails to remember the anniversary.

Wanting Nathan and Lucas to reconcile their differences after taking their frustrations out on each other on the court, Whitey throws the brothers off of the bus 30 miles from home. When they encounter a group of rival basketball players, Nathan and Lucas are forced to team up to out-smart the group and get home in one piece. Meanwhile, Brooke, who was injured during the game, has to have Peyton drive her home after she takes a few too many pain pills. After an unlikely series of events, Peyton has Haley come along for help. Back in Tree Hill, Karen and Keith attend a business dinner that turns into a brawl when Deb and Dan are seated at the same table as them.

At the annual basketball appreciation party thrown by Dan and Deb, old scars are reopened and new friends are made as Keith and Dan once again square off and Karen finds an unexpected ally. Lucas finally gets the opportunity to make a move on Peyton, but when he wants too much, too soon, Peyton backs away. Meanwhile, Haley admits her feelings for Nathan to Lucas, but as Haley and Nathan begin to get closer, a vicious rumor started by a drunk Brooke leaves the buildings of their relationship in shambles.

In what they thought would be a harmless night of fun, Brooke drags Peyton to a college party, but things take a turn for the worst when Peyton is slipped a date rape drug. Brooke calls Lucas for help and the two get to know each other better as they take turns looking after Peyton while she sleeps. Meanwhile, Haley forgives Nathan and gives him as second chance as the two go on their first date.

After a bad fight with both his father and Haley, and while dealing with the constant pressure to be the best, Nathan takes amphetamines to improve his game. However, the drugs take a serious toll on Nathan mentally and physically and they soon land him in the hospital. Meanwhile, Peyton decides to take a chance on Lucas and goes to restart their relationship, but finds that Lucas and Brooke have started a relationship of their own.

Lucas is forced to choose between Brooke and Peyton when both show interest in him. Meanwhile, after the fallout of Nathan's collapse on court and other issues plaguing the team, Whitey cancels practice to force the team to refocus. With no practice, Dan takes Nathan on a father-son weekend in order to try to make-up with both his son and Deb; and Deb and Haley work together to organize an open-mic night at the cafe.

When Nathan decides to quit the basketball team, he has more free time to spend with Haley. However, Nathan's old ways begin to rub off on Haley and she skips class to go with Nathan to his beach house where she gets drunk. Meanwhile, Brooke becomes jealous when Lucas and Peyton become closer friends and the Scott family go to a counselor to attempt to sort out their growing issues.

After a bad storm at sea, Peyton receives horrifying news that her father may have been lost at sea. Lucas takes Peyton on an overnight trip to Hilton Head where Peyton has to identify the body that had been washed ashore. However, when the road is blocked due to the bad thunderstorm, Lucas and Peyton are forced to spend the night together where Peyton, taken over by her emotions, kisses Lucas. Meanwhile, Dan's parents drop by unexpected and a Scott family dinner reveals secrets and lies from long ago.

Karen returns home from her cooking class in Europe and as Keith and Lucas drive to pick her up from the airport, Keith's vehicle crashes into an oncoming car leaving Lucas fighting for his life. After seeing the accident, Dan rushes Lucas to the hospital and is forced to acknowledge Lucas as his son in order to let the doctors perform life-saving surgery. Meanwhile, Peyton debates whether or not to tell Brooke about the kiss she shared with Lucas at the hotel.

After the accident, Karen refuses to leave Lucas' bedside as he lays in a coma. There Karen meets Brooke, Lucas' new girlfriend and Deb tells her that she's decided to divorce Dan. However, Karen is delivered the most devastating news when she is informed that Keith was drinking and driving the night of the accident. Meanwhile, Nathan tries to win back Haley after she breaks up with him.

After waking up from his coma and as he deals with the aftermath of his near-death experience, Lucas decides that he made the wrong choice between Brooke and Peyton. Lucas breaks up with Brooke and secretly gets together with Peyton. However, the truth behind their secret relationship comes out when Lucas has to be rushed back to the hospital and Brooke and Peyton come face-to-face. Meanwhile, Keith is unable to pay his mortgage after paying Lucas' medical bills and is forced to sell his garage to none other than Dan.

In the midst of the bitter divorce between Deb and Dan, Nathan has to decide which parent he wants to live with. Dan decides to push Nathan's hand by bribing him with a new car and threatening to reveal a dark secret that Deb has been keeping. Meanwhile, Lucas hooks up with a beautiful stranger who he might be more connected to than he thinks and singer Sheryl Crow stops by Karen's Cafe.

The basketball team and cheerleading squad, as well as Haley, head to Charlotte for The Classic basketball and cheerleading tournament. Brooke is determined to beat their rival school, but when Theresa comes down with the chicken pox, Peyton begs Haley to step in as a replacement. Meanwhile, Karen and Peyton's father, Larry, hit it off while chaperoning and Nathan and Lucas, assigned to the same room, square off with Haley stuck in the middle of her best friend and boyfriend.

At Tree Hill High's annual "Boy Toy" basketball charity auction, Lucas, Nathan, Jake and the rest of the team (as well as Mouth) are sold to the highest bidder. The auction pairs up Lucas and Haley, Nathan and Peyton, Jake and Nicki, and Mouth and Brooke for the night, resulting in Haley confessing her true feelings about Nathan to Lucas and surprising developments in Jake and Nicki's complex relationship.

Lucas steps into Dan's shoes when he learns that Brooke might be pregnant. Not wanting to follow in his own father's footsteps, Lucas promises to be there for Brooke no matter her decision, but Brooke is reluctant to trust Lucas. Meanwhile, Haley considers having sex with Nathan.

After the guys begin to use Nathan's apartment as party-central, Haley decides to throw a small "take back the party" party. However, small soon turns into large and Haley panics when things begin to spin out of control. Meanwhile, Nathan gets a job at a pretzel stand at the mall to pay his rent, much to Dan's horror, and Brooke, after finding out that she wasn't one of the "close friends" invited to the party, runs into Nicki at the bar and the two decide to crash the party.

Dan is named temporary head coach of the basketball team when Whitey has to have surgery on his eyes, but no one thinks it's a good idea except Dan himself. Haley finds questionable material on Nathan's laptop, leading Haley to pull away from Nathan and leading Nathan to realize that he's inadvertently pressuring Haley into having sex with him. Meanwhile, after a mishap at the mall involving Nicki and Jenny, Jake becomes upset at Peyton and Brooke. Elsewhere, Keith tells Karen that he's leaving Tree Hill, Dan finally agrees to a divorce, and Lucas struggles in making a difficult decision.

Dan leads the Tree Hill Ravens in their first playoff game and Lucas and Nathan have to deal with the constant abuse that Dan dishes out to them. Dan also confronts Haley about her relationship with Nathan, and his threats lead Haley to rethink their relationship. Meanwhile, Whitey learns the severity of his medical condition and Dan suffers a medical condition of his own when he stumbles into a shocking situation. Elsewhere, Keith packs up to move to Charleston and Nathan and Haley take a surprising step in their relationship.
